Changes to Citi Premier and Preferred Card Earnings Structures

Citi is adding new benefits to its Preferred and Premier cards - but some of the existing earning categories are losing value

City is expanding its Premier and Preferred cards with new categories of earnings, including supermarkets, restaurants and popular streaming services.

On April 9, 2020, Citi announced upcoming changes to the profit structure of two cards - the Citi Premier® Card and the Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card. To meet the changing needs of its cardholders, the issuer is introducing new benefits, including adding new categories of earnings such as supermarkets, restaurants and popular streaming services.

The changes are expected to take effect on August 23, 2020.

How the benefits of the cards will change

With the new benefits implemented, Citi Premier cardholders can earn 3 thank-you points for every dollar spent in supermarkets and restaurants, including take away. The card will continue to earn 3 points per dollar for flights, travel, hotels and gas stations.

In addition, Citi offers a new travel benefit: $ 100 off a single hotel stay of $ 500 or more (excluding taxes and fees). Cardholders can take advantage of this offer once per calendar year at

"As our card member needs evolve, we want to make sure that we continue to evolve with them and offer products that best match their spending habits and offer exceptional value," said Lora Monfared, general manager of Proprietary Rewards Products at Citi, in an explanation.

Some of the existing benefits will also change. For example, the premium rate for other trips, such as cruises, tolls, and parking, is reduced from 3 to 1 point per dollar. The same applies to the entertainment category, which receives 1 point per dollar instead of the current 2 points per dollar. For new cardholders, these changes will take effect on August 23, 2020. For existing Premier users, they will take effect on April 10, 2021.

As of April 10, 2021, cardholders will no longer receive 25% more value than gift cards if they redeem points through the ThankYou Travel Center for flights, hotels, cruises, and rental cars.

The changes do not affect the card's annual fee and continue to offer no fees for foreign transactions. In addition, new cardholders can receive a bonus offer of 60,000 points after making purchases of $ 4,000 in the first three months after opening an account - the same bonus that Citi currently offers.

The Preferred Card also receives new earnings categories. The card currently offers 2 points per dollar for restaurants and entertainment and 1 point per dollar for other purchases. As of August 23, 2020, cardholders can also earn 2 points per dollar for cable and popular streaming services.

How will the changes affect cardholders?

From August, new cardholders can collect points in categories such as groceries, take-out and streaming services. Some of the existing travel and entertainment awards will be changed.

For existing Premier cardholders, however, you can take advantage of the new benefits and continue to earn 3 points per dollar for non-air travel and 2 points per dollar for entertainment until April 10, 2021.

The current rewards on the Citi Preferred Card remain unchanged. With the launch of the new earnings category for cable and popular streaming services in August, both new and existing cardholders get a better deal than the current one.
