Around 40 universities have now reported cases of coronavirus and thousands of students are self-isolating to stop the spread of infection.
Some institutions are now suspending face-to-face learning, prompting Labour to suggest that students should be given a rebate on their fees.
The government has so far refused to entertain the idea - but the Prime Minister's spokesman did say that students would be allowed to go home at Christmas.
